:Climate Change

Faculty of Arts Profile:

The Faculty of Arts is the first faculty founded in 1989 as a branch of the University of Benghazi. The Faculty contributed to enriching cultural and scientific life in the city. It has been providing the labor market with thousands of graduates in the different ten departments: Arabic, English, French, Sociology, History, Philosophy, Geography, Islamic studies, Media, and Libraries and Information. Since the foundation and up to the academic year 2021-2022, the faculty has celebrated about 30 graduating classes in different departments. In pursuance of its objectives, the faculty has organized six scientific conferences as follows:

1- The 5th Geographical Conference held by the Libya Geographyl Assembly, held in May 1998.

2- The 11th Conference of the Libyan Arab Historical Assembly held in April 2009.

3- Sirte Conference for Peace and National Unity, held in January 2013.

4- the 14th Geographical Conference of the Libyan Geography Assembly,held in October 2013.

5- The 1st Scientific Conference of the Department of Information, held in May 2018.

6- The 15th Geographical Conference of the Libyan Geography Assembly, held in December 2020.And today, 29 December 2022, the 7th conference of the Faculty of Arts on Climate Change in Libya... 

 

:Objectives of the Conference

:The conference aims to

Decide on the direction of change in climate elements, quantify their extent, and make future projections of climate change in Libya.

Monitor the effects of climate change on natural and human ecosystems.

 Contribute to the community awareness about the risks of climate change.

 Enhance the cooperation in scientific research among researchers

Trends in Climate Change in Libya

i. Evidence of climate change in Libya

ii. Projections of climate change in Libya as global warming deepens

iii. Climate change and extreme weather events (droughts, heatwaves, cold waves, snowstorms, floods, and desertification)

iv. Trends in GHG ratios change

Recommendations:

The papers that were presented at the conference have discussed and addressed climate change. In addition, trends in change and its implications for the population and ecosystems have been discussed. The conference recommends the following:

1. Inviting the specialized authorities to assist in raising awareness about climate change.t

2. Taking the necessary steps to avoid serious effects of climate change in Libya.

3. Looking for alternatives to fossil fuel from eco-friendly sources and utilizing environmental components to generate green electrical energy.

4. The National Meteorological Centre shall re-operate stations that are out of service and make data available to researchers.

5. Enhancing international and institutional cooperation to confront climate change as well as working to reduce air pollutants and GHG which worsen climate warming.

6. improving water conservation in irrigation systems and utilizing alternative, non-traditional water resources.

7. Initiating afforestation campaigns and increasing green areas.

8. The enforcement of the Environmental Protection Act.

9. Operationalizing the Environmental Protection Act, which protects green spaces within cities and criminalizes anyone who infringes housing schemes.

10. Developing coastal surveillance programmes and pre-alerting systems to respond to the threat of rising sea-level.
